The Civil Service Regulations (1965) and the Public Service Commission Regulations (1965) which embrace the Civil, Fire and Prison Service all make provisions for holding examinations for recruitment/appointment/promotion of officers in those Services.

Cabinet was therefore approached in 1966 for the creation of a single Examination Body to regulate all examinations within the Public Service.

Subsequently, in 2004 it was agreed that the Public Service Commission was the authority for appointing an Examination Board to regulate all examinations throughout the Public Service.

The Public Service Commission was entitled as the appropriate authority to vest in the Director of Personnel Administration, the administrative conduct of examinations.

The Examination and Assessment Unit is the Secretariat to the Public Service Examination Board, which is responsible for all administrative functions pertaining to the conduct of the examinations approved by the Public Service Commission. These administrative functions include the following:-

• Submit notes to the Public Service Examination Board/Commission
• Ensure that all letters of representations, complaints and queries are submitted to the Board for consideration;
• Appointing relevant examiners;
• Preparation and dispatch of notification and results letters to candidates;
• Preparation of registers;
• Sourcing of supervisors and invigilators to manage the examinations in the duties appointed;
• Printing and packaging of examination question papers;
• Organization of venues throughout Trinidad and Tobago for the sittings of the relevant examinations;
• Organization of stationary and supplies for the conduct of the examination;
• Reconciliation of examination answer booklets with registers after an examination was conducted; and
• Ensure the safety and security of all examination documents
